Andy transformed a photograph of hibiscus blossoms into a technicolor series of silkscreens titled Flowers, and debuted at the influential Leo Castelli Gallery. ‘These were huge screens for the Flower paintings. Each screen had one flower on it. They couldn’t make them any bigger. This was the biggest they came. It was very hard to work. We would have to pass the squeegee back and forth, putting the ink, squeezing the in, through the silkscreen. I’d pass the squeegee to Andy -it was sort of like the Olympic torch. I’d push it, and then Andy would pull it and vice versa.’ Gerard Malanga
