‘The final shot features the Rolling Stones lying in the grass in front of the pavilion with smoke atmospherically pouring from its windows. A little while after we lit the smoke bombs, we heard a police siren wailing and then two jovial coppers came over to say they’d had a fire reported, but they were pleased to see the band posing – sadly they left before I had a chance to ask them to be in the shot!’ Michael Joseph

Swarkestone locals were bemused and excited to discover the Rolling Stones in the local pub… the vibe here was to be the Stones as louche medieval troubadours. Interior photos of the eponymous, but far from beggarly, ‘banquet’ had already been shot in a sumptuously panelled room at Sarum Chase, a house described by Pevsner as ‘pure Hollywood Tudor.’ Caroline Standford for The Landmark Trust.

Michael Joseph’s ethereal photos of the legendary were taken on location in 1968, at a Gothic studio in Hampstead and at the derelict ruins of Swarkestone in Derbyshire. The photos have an eccentric style, using costumes and live animals throughout as props. Atmospheric shots outside a manner house contrast with elaborately staged portraits, with the depiction of a medieval feast at the heart of the exhibition.
