‘My career just started just started only a few years back before I met the Rolling Stones. I was the youngest of the photographers on Fleet Street and the editors knew I loved music. I took them to the park, walked them around Soho and into Tin Pan Alley. I got some great shots of them just hanging out backstage, getting ready to go on, having a last minute haircut, eating at the canteen…
I used to go to a club at the back of Leicester Square to sit there with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, joking about what job they’d do after this. I did not realise what an impact they were having until I went to Hollywood in 1964 on an assignment. Here I was taking photos of legends like Fred Astaire and they all wanted to talk about was the Rolling Stones!’ Terry O’Neill
