Sandra Howard, Baroness Howard of Lympne, ‘Traffic at St. Paul’s Cathedral’
By Brian Duffy
London, U.K. 1959
Signed silver gelatin print
Edition of 25
Image size 18h x 18w inches
Duffy took this photo for British Vogue. Capturing a model before the unmistakable backdrop of St Pauls Cathedral in London. Duffy took this photograph standing between Pilgrim St. and Stationers Hall EC4 on Ludgate Hill. The model, Sandra Paul (now known as Sandra Howard, Baroness Howard of Lympne) steps off the pavement with the West Front of the Cathedral behind her. The bollard in the foreground obscures the view of the South-West Clocktower. The black cab on the left is an Austin FX3 which were produced until 1958 and remained in service until the late 1960s. Just 20 years before Duffy’s photograph was taken, Herbert Mason photographed St Paul’s Cathedral surrounded by flames on the 114th night of the Blitz. Damage from the Blitz and smog can be seen along the bottom level of the Cathedral.
